Any first-time player without a tournament handicap will use the Modified Calloway Handicap System defined below.  All succeeding handicaps will be based on a three year moving average of your last three rounds played in the tournament to more accurately reflect your recent golfing ability.

The Callaway Handicap System

by Lionel F. Callaway, Golf Professional

Under the Callaway System a player's handicap is determined after each round by deducting from his gross score for 18 holes the scores of the worst individual holes during the first 16 holes played. The table below shows the number of "worst hole" scores he may deduct and the adjustment to be made, based on his gross score. For instance, if his gross score for 18 holes is 96, he turns to the table and to the right of that score finds that he may deduct the total for his three worst holes scored on holes 1 through 16 inclusive. Thus, if he has one 9, one 8, and a 7 in the first 16 holes, his handicap totals 24. From his total a further adjustment (plus or minus) is then made according to the adjustment shown at the bottom of each column. For a gross score of 96, the handicap adjustment requires a deduction of 2, resulting in a final handicap of 22. Thus a gross score of 96 minus the 22 Callaway handicap equals a net score of 74.

The Modified Callaway Handicap System

by Kevin A. Baroni, Golf Hack

The existing Callaway System is only effective when playing a course with a par between 70 and 72.  So what do you do when you are playing a small course with a par less than 70 or when you play on an executive 9-hole course?  You adjust.  Resistance is futile.  I had to develop a modified Callaway System for the Anthony T. Baroni Classic tournament at the Rancho Duarte Golf Course.  The standard Callaway System simply doesn't apply.  I used a different par range of between 29 and 31.  All of the standard Callaway System adjustment rules remain, except that the maximum handicap is 21 rather than 50.  In addition, the note eliminating specific holes from deduction has been removed and ties are determined by scoring category.
